Sacha Baron Cohen returns with Ali G in new film

British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has released his directorial debut, ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’, reviving his iconic 1990s character Ali G. The mockumentary follows the character as he travels to the United States to seek a television comeback after discovering his partner, Julie, is pregnant.

Baron Cohen stated that he resurrected the “problematic dinosaur” of a character to satirize modern political polarization, extremism, and the culture of cancellation. The film utilizes guerrilla comedy tactics, featuring unscripted interactions with real people to expose social prejudices and misinformation.

The release has faced significant controversy, including boycott campaigns from critics who accuse the character of reinforcing racial stereotypes and engaging in cultural appropriation. Some Nordic cinemas have reportedly removed the film from their schedules, and the production has faced backlash on social media. Baron Cohen has defended the work, arguing that the character’s absurdity is intended to undermine the establishment and highlight the stupidity of those who take such personas seriously.
