Sacha Baron Cohen returns as Ali G in new film amid controversy

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen is reviving his iconic character Ali G for a new feature film titled ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’. The announcement has sparked significant debate regarding cultural appropriation and racial stereotypes.

Critics, including British Labour MP Paulette Hamilton and musician Jordan Stephens, have raised concerns that the character’s imitation of hip-hop culture reinforces harmful racial clichés. Some argue that the character’s catchphrases are used in real-world contexts to mock Black people. In response, Cohen has defended the satire, arguing in an essay for The Times that the character is a white man from Staines who acts as a cultural appropriator, thereby making himself the object of the joke.

Cohen contends that the character’s perceived flaws and dated nature are intentional, serving as a response to a modern climate where prejudice is amplified by social media. The film’s trailer features various public figures and addresses contemporary themes, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and global conflicts. While the comeback has generated significant buzz, including a large-scale fan gathering in London, it has also faced backlash, leading to the cancellation of a planned premiere in Denmark.
