AfD leads Saxony-Anhalt polls ahead of September election
Recent polling by Insa indicates the AfD is leading in the upcoming Saxony-Anhalt state election, scheduled for September 6, with approximately 42% support. The CDU follows at 22%, while the Linke stands at 13%. The BSW is projected to cross the 5% threshold with 5% of the vote, potentially acting as a kingmaker. BSW candidate Thomas Schulze has stated that his party will not support CDU candidate Sven Schulze, which could facilitate an AfD victory in a third election round if the BSW abstains.
Economists from the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) have raised concerns regarding the AfD's economic platform, describing it as non-financeable with a projected annual gap of at least 2.2 billion euros. Experts warn that the party's stance on migration could also deter skilled labor from entering the region.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where elections are set for September 20, the AfD is also polling strongly at 36%. The political landscape in eastern Germany is characterized by demographic shifts, including shrinking populations and a high proportion of pension-age residents.
