Sachsen-Anhalt election triggers special TV programming in Germany

German television networks, including public broadcasters ARD and ZDF as well as private station RTL, implemented extensive special programming to cover the state election in Sachsen-Anhalt.

On Monday, September 7, 2026, ARD and ZDF continued program adjustments following the election. ARD scheduled a special broadcast of ‘Hart aber fair’ to discuss the election's impact on Germany, featuring guests such as Philipp Amthor (CDU), Ines Schwerdtner (Die Linke), and Markus Frohnmaier (AfD). ZDF replaced its standard evening news format with a special titled ‘Nach der Wahl in Sachsen-Anhalt’.

Coverage of the election results saw significant viewership. ARD’s election programming reached an average of 3.34 million viewers with a 20.9 percent market share, peaking at 4.24 million viewers during its later broadcast. ZDF averaged 2.01 million viewers with a 14.4 percent market share. The AfD, which has been critical of public broadcasting, achieved an overall election victory in the state.
