Sachsen-Anhalt funds school trips to Jewish communities

The State Agency for Political Education in Sachsen-Anhalt and the State Association of Jewish Communities in Sachsen-Anhalt have launched a new cooperation project to facilitate school trips to local Jewish communities. Under the agreement, the State Agency will fully cover transportation costs for school classes during 2026 and 2027.

The initiative aims to make Jewish life visible and experiential for young people, serving as a measure against rising antisemitism. By visiting synagogues in Dessau-Roßlau, Halle, and Magdeburg, students will receive pedagogical support and engage in on-site educational work. The project seeks to move beyond a purely historical or victim-based perspective, presenting Jewish communities as active sites of culture, exchange, and contemporary life.

This program expands upon existing partnerships with the Berend-Lehmann Museum in Halberstadt and the Gröbzig Synagogue. Education Minister Jan Riedel noted that the goal is to help students perceive Jewish life as a living reality rather than just a subject in a history book, thereby fostering respect and reducing prejudice.
