Sachsen-Anhalt invests 83 million euros in water supply infrastructure

Sachsen-Anhalt has launched five projects to strengthen its drinking water supply, backed by approximately 83 million euros in funding from the European Regional Development Fund. The initiative aims to create additional capacity of roughly 58,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day to combat rising demand caused by climate change and increasing drought conditions.

Key measures include the expansion of the Wienrode waterworks in the Harz region and the reactivation of the Beesen waterworks near Halle, which had been in reserve since 2007. Plans are also underway for a new Elbe waterworks near Magdeburg and the creation of redundant pipeline structures to ensure supply security. These steps address high utilization rates in existing networks managed by Fernwasserversorgung Elbaue-Ostharz and Technische Werke Magdeburg.

In neighboring Niedersachsen, soil moisture levels indicate significant drought stress. While the north remains relatively moist, approximately 60 percent of the state is experiencing moderate to severe drought. The most intense dryness is concentrated in the southern and central regions, particularly between Hannover and the Harz, posing risks to agriculture and groundwater replenishment.
