Sachsen-Anhalt Landtag passes motion to halt Ukraine aid
The Saxony-Anhalt state parliament passed a joint motion from the AfD and BSW during a special session on October 14, 2026. The motion calls for the suspension of weapons deliveries to Ukraine and the immediate cessation of all financial support exceeding humanitarian aid.
Sahra Wagenknecht of the BSW argued that the move supports peace negotiations and stops the transfer of billions to Kyiv that are funded through domestic budget cuts. This stance has faced criticism from journalists and economists who argue that military and social spending often rise simultaneously and that Ukraine aid is not drawn from the regular federal budget in a way that necessitates domestic social cuts.
Additionally, AfD Landtag President Tobias Rausch has expressed intentions to invite foreign ambassadors, including those from the United States, Israel, and Russia, to the parliament. This move has raised questions regarding the German Basic Law, specifically Article 32, which stipulates that the maintenance of relations with foreign states is the responsibility of the federal government.
