Saxony-Anhalt election: AfD leads in polls as Magdeburg businesses strike
Ahead of the Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, political tensions are rising in Magdeburg. Approximately 120 businesses owned by migrants participated in a 'Migra-Streik' on August 26, closing their doors for several hours to protest against racism and the political platform of the AfD.
Recent polling by Infratest dimap shows the AfD leading significantly with 42 percent, followed by the CDU at 22 percent. Other parties include the Linke at 11 percent, the SPD at 8 percent, and the Greens at 6 percent. The BSW and FDP are currently polling below the five-percent threshold.
In response to the upcoming election, the Saxony-Anhalt Interior Ministry has announced heightened security measures. Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang stated that police are preparing for various escalation scenarios to protect peaceful demonstrations and the electoral process, with additional support requested from other federal states.
