Sachsenenergie and 50 Hertz to invest 5.2 billion euros in East Saxony power grids
Energy infrastructure companies Sachsenenergie and 50 Hertz plan to invest over 5.2 billion euros in the power grids of East Saxony by 2045. The investment aims to meet the rising energy demands of the growing semiconductor industry in Dresden, as well as the electrification needs of local steelworks and the increasing use of heat pumps and electric vehicles.
To modernize the aging infrastructure, Sachsenenergie has upgraded the Rähnitz substation and commissioned a new power line to supply additional energy to northern Dresden. This expansion is critical for companies such as TSMC, Infineon, and Globalfoundries, which require significant power for their microelectronics manufacturing facilities. While a large substation in Alt-Wilschdorf is planned for 2030, industry players require capacity sooner to support their construction and operations.
