Sacramento and Somerville launch overdose prevention initiatives

In observance of International Overdose Awareness Day and Recovery Month, local governments in Sacramento and Somerville are launching initiatives to combat opioid overdoses through training and community remembrance.

In Sacramento, the Office of Nighttime Economy and the Sacramento County Opioid Coalition are providing free naloxone training for hospitality and nightlife staff. The program, which includes the BarCan initiative, teaches participants how to recognize overdoses and administer Narcan. Attendees will receive complimentary Narcan kits, CPR face shields, and other response resources. Mayor Kevin McCarty is also set to present a proclamation recognizing the awareness day.

In Somerville, the city is hosting a candlelight vigil and flag planting at City Hall to honor residents lost to opioid-related overdoses. Somerville Prevention Services will also distribute harm reduction materials, including fentanyl test strips, nasal spray naloxone, and syringe disposal boxes, alongside offering in-person training sessions.
