Sacramento: Stalker kills Indian-origin woman before dying in police standoff
Shalini Thakur, a 38-year-old woman of Indian origin, was shot and killed on September 8, 2026, in a parking lot outside a Panera Bread in Sacramento, California. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, allegedly stalked Thakur for months. Investigators reported that the harassment included using an Apple AirTag to track her vehicle, deflating her tires, and entering her apartment using a copied key while she slept.
Thakur had obtained a restraining order against Rohit in May, which he reportedly violated in July. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office stated that while deputies had probable cause to arrest him following the violation, they were unable to locate him and did not initiate a large-scale manhunt.
Following the shooting, Rohit fled the scene but was later cornered by police on Highway 50. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with authorities. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Rohit was an undocumented immigrant from India who had entered the U.S. through Arizona in 2023 and had previously been released by Border Patrol under the Biden administration. Federal prosecutors noted that California’s sanctuary laws prevented local law enforcement from notifying immigration authorities about the suspect.
