Sacramento, Minnesota, and Quebec consider stadium subsidies
In California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation allowing the use of a mega-Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district to fund a stadium for a potential Major League Baseball expansion team in Sacramento. The plan involves redirecting approximately $1 billion in property, sales, and hotel taxes toward the project.
In Minnesota, gubernatorial candidates Amy Klobuchar and Lisa Demuth have expressed openness to considering state subsidies for venues used by the Timberwolves, Lynx, Wild, and Vikings. Klobuchar noted that any such support must be managed carefully to protect taxpayers.
In North Carolina, state senate candidates in Wake County have voiced opposition to using state funds to attract an MLB expansion team to Raleigh. Meanwhile, in Canada, the Canadian Football League is reportedly prepared to conditionally approve a tenth franchise in Quebec City, contingent on a proposed C$350 million stadium that currently lacks a formal funding plan.
