Sacramento shooting and standoff close Highway 50

A fatal shooting and subsequent standoff in Sacramento caused significant traffic disruptions on Highway 50 on Tuesday afternoon. The incident began around 3 p.m. in the parking lot of a Panera Bread restaurant located near the corner of Howe and Northrup avenues.

According to Sheriff’s Lt. Amar Gandhi, a man chased a woman and shot her in front of several witnesses. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Fire Department. Following the shooting, law enforcement used license plate readers to locate the suspect's vehicle near Highway 50 and Watt Avenue.

When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to exit, leading to a standoff on the freeway. Aerial footage showed law enforcement surrounding the car with weapons drawn while surveillance drones assisted. The standoff ended after the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Highway 50 has since been reopened to traffic.
