Sacred Heart of Jesus monument history and Alfonso XIII's consecration

The history of the Sacred Heart of Jesus monument at Cerro de los Ángeles is marked by significant religious and political events. In 1916, construction began through a national subscription, with notable contributions from the family of Mother Maravillas de Jesús, who made a significant anonymous donation of 1,000 pesetas.

On May 30, 1919, King Alfonso XIII consecrated Spain to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the monument. Records indicate that during this period, the King faced pressure from the Freemasonry to refrain from the consecration, reportedly receiving threats regarding his ability to retain the crown if he proceeded.
