SADC forum urges increased investment in climate early-warning systems

At the 33rd Southern Africa Climate Outlook Forum (SARCOF-33) in Swakopmund, Namibia, Veikko Nekundi, the Namibian Minister of Works and Transport, called for increased investment in meteorological and hydrological services across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Nekundi emphasized that early-warning systems are the most cost-effective tools for combating climate disasters. He urged member states to provide predictable domestic financing for essential infrastructure, including weather stations, satellites, radars, and data networks. He warned that scientific systems cannot protect communities without adequate funding and staffing.

The forum aims to translate climate observations and seasonal predictions into actionable guidance for sectors such as agriculture, water, energy, health, and disaster management. This effort aligns with the United Nations goal of ensuring universal protection through life-saving early-warning systems by the end of 2027. The SADC Secretariat noted that the region remains highly vulnerable to climate variability, including droughts, floods, and extreme heat.
