SADC Organ Troika Summit transfers chairship from Malawi to Eswatini

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace, security, and democratic governance. During the Organ Troika Summit in Durban, South Africa, Malawi handed over its chairship of the Organ to Eswatini.

Malawi’s Second Vice-President, Enock Chihana, emphasized that the recommendations adopted during the summit will provide strategic guidance for addressing regional challenges. Key issues discussed included the security situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), political developments in Madagascar, and security challenges in Mozambique. Chihana noted that peace in the eastern DRC remains attainable through collective efforts involving SADC, the East African Community, and the African Union.

Regarding Mozambique, Chihana highlighted the importance of national dialogue between the government and opposition to address post-election violence. SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi also stressed the necessity of regional cooperation in mediation and conflict prevention. Eswatini, as the incoming chair, has already demonstrated readiness by participating in leadership roles, including preparations for a SADC Electoral Observation Mission in Malawi.
