The Saddle Lake Cree Nation has announced plans to use its reserve lands as a safe haven for gender-affirming care, asserting tribal sovereignty in response to recent Alberta provincial legislation. The move aims to protect both Indigenous and non-Indigenous transgender and gender-diverse individuals from restrictions imposed by Alberta Bills 26, 27, and 29.

Chief Dale Steinhauer stated that the Nation intends to invoke the Treaty No. 6 ‘Medicine Chest’ clause to uphold its responsibility to protect the health and well-being of its people. Dr. James Makokis, a family physician from the Nation, highlighted the urgency of the situation, describing the impact on gender-diverse people as a public health emergency.

To support the upcoming legal challenges, the Nation launched a fundraiser that successfully raised over CA$60,000 within two days.
