SADFONS Project reaches halfway to seed rice production target

The Smallholder Agriculture Development for Food and Nutrition Security (SADFONS) Project has produced over 100 metric tons of seed rice, reaching the halfway mark of its 250mt target. Launched in June 2021, the initiative aims to strengthen food security, reduce rural poverty, and build institutional capacity in Liberia.

To support agricultural mechanization, the African Development Bank (AfDB) donated a 90-horsepower tractor and various implements to the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI). The donation package includes a heavy-duty thresher, disc plough, seed planter, power tillers, motorized sprayers, GPS systems, and drone technology for field monitoring.

The seed component of the project, which runs through 2027, is being implemented by CARI across 11 Liberian counties. The project focuses on increasing productivity in rice, cassava, and vegetables while improving market access and climate resilience.
