Sadiq Khan convicted of failing to tax vehicle he denies owning

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been convicted and fined following a criminal prosecution by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for failing to tax a 24-year-old Nissan Micra. The conviction occurred in his absence via the Single Justice Procedure in Herefordshire, resulting in a total bill of £340.84, which includes a £220 fine, £85 in costs, and £35.84 in unpaid tax.

City Hall officials have denied ownership of the vehicle, stating that neither the Mayor nor Transport for London (TfL) owns the car. The case appears to have been complicated by a mailing error; court documents reveal that DVLA warning letters were sent to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant in east London rather than the nearby TfL offices.

Spokespeople for the Mayor suggested the situation may be a scam, noting a rise in vehicles being falsely registered to Khan by opponents of his Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion. The DVLA is currently reviewing the case and investigating the circumstances surrounding the prosecution to determine if the conviction should be withdrawn.
