Safari Rally Kenya faces WRC calendar uncertainty over funding

The Safari Rally Kenya's position in the World Rally Championship (WRC) is uncertain as the event seeks to secure its place on next season's calendar. The uncertainty follows a decision by Kenyan President William Ruto to end public funding for the Naivasha-based rally. Ruto stated that government resources will instead be redirected toward promoting sports in schools and other sectors, requiring the event to be fully supported by the private sector moving forward.

While private funding is currently being sought, officials indicate that time is running out to finalize the matter. The situation is reportedly the primary factor delaying the announcement of the upcoming WRC calendar. FIA road sport director Emilia Abel expressed support for the historic event but noted that a deadline is in place, emphasizing the need for delivery from the Kenyan National Sporting Association. WRC Promoter COO Julien Vial added that clarity and certainty regarding funding are required to finalize the championship schedule.
