The Central Institute of Orthopaedics (CIO) at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi has successfully performed its first robot-assisted Total Knee Replacement (TKR).

The procedure was conducted on August 22 for a 75-year-old male patient from an economically disadvantaged background. The surgery was provided entirely free of cost through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, marking a significant step in making advanced surgical technology accessible within the public healthcare system.

The initiative was led by Dr. Kavita Sharma, Director of VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, with clinical guidance from Prof. Dr. Sumit Sural, Director of the CIO. The surgical team was headed by Dr. Bhagwati Prasad Sharma, supported by Dr. Dhruve Maini and Dr. Kartik Yadav. This milestone aims to strengthen the hospital's capacity to deliver sophisticated, technology-enabled orthopaedic treatments to patients in the public sector.
