Safer Australian Roads and Highways demands better motorway design

Peter Frazer, founder of the advocacy group Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH), is calling for improved highway and motorway design to prevent fatal accidents. He argues that inadequate road shoulders prevent drivers from safely pulling off the road during breakdowns or crashes.

Mr. Frazer’s advocacy stems from the 2012 death of his daughter, Sarah Frazer, who was killed on the Hume Highway near Mittagong. Sarah and a tow truck driver were struck by a passing vehicle after her car broke down; she had left a voicemail for her father stating, “I’m afraid I could get killed here,” because vehicles were passing dangerously close to her.

Mr. Frazer noted that a recent death in July served as another reminder of the necessity for better road infrastructure to protect motorists and service providers.
