Safety and feng shui concerns regarding specific ornamental plants
Certain ornamental plants are discouraged for planting in front of homes due to both feng shui traditions and physical safety risks.
Cacti are often avoided in feng shui because their sharp spines are believed to create opposing energy that may disrupt the flow of prosperity and harmony. From a practical standpoint, the sharp spines pose a physical danger, potentially causing skin abrasions or eye injuries to children and pets if placed near walkways or entrances.
Oleander is highlighted as a significant safety risk because the entire plant contains cardiac glycosides. Ingestion of any part of the plant, including leaves, flowers, or stems, can lead to serious poisoning, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, and dangerous heart rhythm disturbances in both humans and animals.
