Safety concerns over strawberries in Poland
Research shows that strawberries lose quality quickly after harvest, with gray mold (Botrytis cinerea and Botrytis fragariae) causing rapid decay. Consumers are advised to select uniformly red, firm berries and avoid any with soft spots, bruises, wet patches or visible fungal growth. The same season has raised food‑safety alarms after a Danish food‑agency review found pesticide residues in 21 of 47 strawberry samples tested. Nine of the contaminated batches were Danish; the remaining samples originated from Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, China and Morocco. Experts warn that multiple pesticide residues can act together, potentially disrupting hormonal balance and affecting the nervous system.
The findings highlight the dual risks of microbial spoilage and chemical contamination in strawberries sold across European markets, urging tighter quality controls and informed consumer choices.
