Safety concerns rise over illegal e-bike and scooter use
Authorities in Yorktown and users of the Intercity Cycleway in Australia are reporting increased safety risks due to the unlawful operation of e-bikes, e-scooters, and motorbikes.
In Yorktown, the Police Department has logged 76 complaints involving motorized cycles and scooters this year. Police Chief Justin Foley noted that current New York State laws limit enforcement, as officers cannot issue tickets directly to children under 16, and citations to parents require the parent to be actively witnessing the violation. To address these gaps, police have proposed a local ordinance that would prohibit e-bikes on sidewalks, mandate helmets for all ages, and restrict operation by those under 16 on public property. The proposed penalty structure includes educational warnings for first offenses, followed by fines up to $1,000 and vehicle impoundment.
Separately, a survey of Intercity Cycleway users identified illegal motorized vehicles as a primary safety concern. Respondents reported near-miss collisions with high-speed riders and instances of harassment by young people. Users have called for increased police presence, improved lighting, and greater CCTV coverage to mitigate these risks.
