The Illinois Poison Center (IPC) reports over 1,000 insecticide-related exposures annually, frequently involving pyrethrins and pyrethroids. While these substances are widely used in sprays for ants, roaches, and mosquitoes, they can cause skin or eye irritation, allergic reactions, and respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. Notably, pyrethroids can be extremely toxic to cats.

To mitigate risks, experts recommend ventilating areas well during and after application, removing children and pets from treated zones until surfaces are dry, and wearing gloves.

Alternative pest management strategies include natural deterrents and physical barriers. Effective eco-friendly methods include using peppermint essential oil sprays, potted herbs like basil or mint, and diatomaceous earth. For garden maintenance, encouraging beneficial insects and using physical netting or soapy water sprays can help manage pests without heavy chemical use.
