Snake safety: Guidelines for home encounters and prevention

Safety guidelines have been issued regarding encounters with snakes in residential areas, emphasizing caution whether the snake is moving, coiled, or appears dead. Experts advise that if a snake is spotted near walls, in a garden, or coiled inside a home, the immediate priority is to maintain distance and move children and pets to safety.

It is cautioned not to attempt to identify the species or provoke the animal with sticks or brooms, as even a seemingly dead or stationary snake can react quickly if threatened. In such cases, individuals should monitor the snake's location from a distance and contact professional animal rescue services or local authorities for safe removal.

To prevent snake presence, several natural deterrents and preventative measures are suggested. Keeping homes well-ventilated and clear of debris is essential. Additionally, keeping pets like cats and dogs can help, as their movement and scent may deter snakes. Planting certain aromatic flowers, such as marigolds and lavender, may also serve as a supplementary deterrent, though they are not considered absolute shields.
