Snake safety: Expert advice for handling encounters in the home

Experts provide safety guidelines for handling snake encounters within residential properties. When a snake is discovered in a home, the primary recommendation is to remain calm, maintain a safe distance, and remove children and pets from the area. If possible, isolate the snake in a single room by closing doors and blocking the gaps underneath with towels.

Authorities advise against attempting to catch, strike, or chase snakes with brooms or sticks, as these actions can provoke defensive behavior and increase the risk of bites. If a snake is suspected to be venomous, very large, or in an inaccessible location, professional services should be contacted immediately.

To prevent future intrusions, homeowners are encouraged to eliminate hiding spots by keeping firewood away from foundations, removing brush piles, and regularly mowing grass. Sealing cracks around pipes, vents, and walls is also essential. Additionally, controlling rodent populations is a key preventative measure, as snakes often enter homes following their food sources. Experts note that many commercial snake repellents, such as ultrasonic devices and essential oils, are not reliable solutions.
