Safety protocols for handling snakes found inside homes

When a snake is discovered inside a home, the initial minutes are critical for safety. Experts advise against common reflexive actions such as screaming, using brooms or sticks to chase the animal, or attempting to kill it, as these actions can provoke a defensive strike.

To minimize danger, residents should follow three primary steps:

1. Create distance: Immediately move children, elderly individuals, and pets away from the area. Avoid approaching the snake to identify its species, as many people cannot reliably distinguish between venomous and non-venomous snakes.

2. Isolate the area: If possible, close doors to contain the snake within a single room without approaching the animal.

3. Monitor from a distance: Observe the snake's movement from a safe vantage point. If the snake disappears under furniture or into crevices, do not attempt to search for it by reaching into dark spaces or moving heavy objects, as this increases the risk of an accidental encounter.
