Safety Tips for Jump‑Starting Electric Cars and Charging Smartphones

Electric vehicles have a small 12‑volt starter battery that powers the high‑voltage system. If it is discharged, a standard jumper cable can be used from another vehicle: connect both cars’ positive terminals, then the negative of the donor to a ground point on the disabled car, start the donor, and after a few minutes start the EV. After the jump, drive the EV for a longer distance to recharge the starter battery. A portable booster can also supply the needed power, but its capacity must match the EV’s starter battery size to avoid overloading.

When charging a smartphone, manufacturers such as Huawei recommend plugging the charger into the wall outlet first and then connecting the phone. This order reduces exposure to the brief inrush‑current voltage spike that occurs when the charger is powered, which can potentially shorten battery life or damage circuitry, especially with cheap or damaged chargers. Experts note that high‑quality chargers mitigate the risk, but the precaution remains advisable.
