Safranbolu begins new saffron planting season with scientific pest protection

In the UNESCO World Heritage district of Safranbolu, Karabük, the new season for saffron cultivation has officially begun. Local producers have started planting saffron bulbs in preparation for the October and November flowering period.

To improve crop quality and yield, a new scientific project titled 'Controlled Conditions Science-Based Saffron Cultivation' has been launched. This initiative introduces seven R&D applications to protect the plants from underground pests such as moles, blind mice, and wireworms. One notable method involves using steel wire cages placed underground to protect the bulbs. These pests are estimated to reduce yields by 30% to 40%.

Saffron remains one of the world's most expensive spices, with prices in the region reaching up to 600,000 Turkish Lira per kilogram last season. The high cost is driven by the intensive labor required; it takes approximately 80,000 flowers to produce just 500 grams of dried saffron. Currently, 51 producers in the district manage 110 decares of saffron land.
