SAG-AFTRA manages AI protections and member disputes
The SAG-AFTRA labor union is navigating significant challenges regarding artificial intelligence and member benefits. Following a 118-day strike in 2023, the union secured a contract that establishes guardrails for AI usage. The agreement includes definitions for “digital replicas” and “synthetic performers,” requiring studios to obtain consent before scanning an actor’s likeness and mandating compensation for certain uses.
Separately, actor Drake Bell has publicly criticized the union and its leadership. Bell expressed frustration after failing to meet the minimum earnings threshold of $28,933 required to qualify for the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan. Having earned approximately $17,480, Bell urged others not to pursue acting or join the union, citing his inability to access health insurance benefits despite his years in the industry.
