Hokkaido university student murder trial advances as co-defendant testifies

The criminal trial over the 2024 killing of university student Tomoya Hase in Ebetsu, Hokkaido, has entered a new phase. Six youths were accused of assaulting Hase in a park, stealing his money and card, and causing his death. The alleged ringleader, 18‑year‑old Yuto Kawaguchi, faces charges including robbery resulting in death.

During the hearing, 21‑year‑old co‑defendant Ayane Kawamura took the stand. She said Kawaguchi ordered her to "do it" and described repeated blows, kicks and a prolonged assault. She also recounted that another participant, 21‑year‑old Yuka Yagihara, urged the attackers with "more, don't stop" and "I have no intention to forgive". Kawaguchi appeared displeased, shaking his head as the testimony was given. The court has scheduled further questioning for Kawaguchi on July 15, with a verdict expected on August 7.
