Sagamore Bridge replacement secures $956 million in federal funding
Massachusetts officials have reached a major milestone in the replacement of the Sagamore Bridge, securing $956 million in federal grant funding. The state has also issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the project’s design-build contract, marking the final procurement phase before construction begins.
MassDOT expects construction to commence in winter 2027, with final proposals due in May 2027 and a public bid opening in July 2027. The Federal Highway Administration is anticipated to authorize an additional $371 million in federal funding in mid-October. The project, estimated to cost over $1.6 billion, will be managed by MassDOT in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The RFP includes a requirement for the selected firm to enter into a project labor agreement (PLA) with specific local unions. While state officials defend the necessity of the agreement, a study from the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance suggested that such an agreement could potentially increase project costs by $293 million.
The new infrastructure project aims to replace the 91-year-old bridge to improve safety and traffic flow for Cape Cod residents and visitors. The new eastbound span is projected to open in 2033.
