Sagano Scenic Railway unveils new sightseeing train design
The Sagano Scenic Railway has unveiled its new sightseeing train, scheduled to begin operations on March 1, 2027. The design, supervised by GK Design Research Hiroshima, aims to blend the valley beauty of Hozukyo, the nostalgia of the old San-in Line, and the refined atmosphere of Sagano and Arashiyama.
The new rolling stock features a black-based exterior that maintains the traditional red and yellow accent colors of the existing fleet. To maximize views of the surrounding landscape, the interior includes large windows and skylights, with black frames and wooden materials used for seating and flooring to enhance the classic train travel aesthetic.
A new premium cabin named ‘Rankyo’ will be available in Car 4, offering a specialized experience with tatami seating and expansive forward-facing views. The train's symbolic graphics incorporate motifs of the Hozugawa River, autumn leaves, cherry blossoms, and Meiji-era tunnels.
