Sagar hooch tragedy: 22 dead and over 100 hospitalized in Madhya Pradesh
A major hooch tragedy in the Banda tehsil of Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, has resulted in at least 22 deaths and left over 100 people hospitalized after the consumption of suspected toxic liquor. Victims have exhibited symptoms such as fever, headache, and dizziness, with some cases requiring airlift to Bhopal for advanced care.
In response to the crisis, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken significant administrative action. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered a thorough investigation, leading to the suspension of several excise and police officials, including the Banda station in-charge and the Gugra outpost in-charge. Additionally, a magisterial inquiry has been ordered by Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal to determine the cause of the deaths and identify those responsible for the distribution of the illicit alcohol.
Law enforcement has arrested 10 suspects and filed cases against approximately 30 individuals, including liquor contractors. While initial investigations suggested a connection to a smuggling racket from Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, the Uttar Pradesh Police have rejected these claims, stating there is no evidence linking the tragedy to illegal production in their jurisdiction. The state government has also announced financial assistance of 4 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased.
