Sagawa Express reports potential leak of 53.23 million pieces of personal information
Sagawa Express, a major Japanese delivery company, announced on October 23 that unauthorized access to its package inquiry service may have resulted in the leak of up to approximately 53.23 million pieces of personal information. This represents the largest scale leak in the company's history.
The affected data includes names, addresses, and phone numbers of both individuals and corporations for shipments handled from late June through September. The leak also involves member information from the company's web-based delivery notification service. However, the company stated that credit card information and passwords were not included in the breach.
While the total number of records is high, the company noted that the figure includes duplicates from individuals who used the service multiple times and does not represent the actual number of unique people affected. As of the announcement, no secondary damage from the misuse of this information has been confirmed.
The inquiry service, which had been suspended for security inspections and countermeasures, has since resumed operations. Other services, such as online package reception, remain suspended as the company works to strengthen its access management and monitoring systems.
