Sage Point Nursing Home fire in La Plata displaces 32 residents
An electrical malfunction involving an exterior security light caused a predawn fire at the Sage Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in La Plata, Maryland, on August 28, 2026. The fire, which broke out shortly after 4 a.m., spread into the attic above the facility’s 300 wing.
Approximately 32 residents were evacuated from the affected wing. During the evacuation, one resident sustained an injury and was transported to a local hospital. Emergency responders, including roughly 55 firefighters from La Plata and surrounding departments, brought the blaze under control within approximately 20 minutes.
While the building’s fire alarm system and fire doors operated as designed to contain smoke, officials noted that the attic area was not protected by a sprinkler system. Total damages are estimated at $100,000 for the structure and $25,000 for its contents. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is working with health and local code officials to determine if the remaining portions of the building are safe for continued occupancy.
