Sagittarius A* Black Hole Shows Recent Flare Activity

Astronomers using the Imaging X‑ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) have detected bright X‑ray reflections from dense gas clouds near the Milky Way’s central supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*. The reflections are interpreted as an echo of a flare that occurred roughly 200 years ago, indicating that the black hole, previously thought to be dormant, experienced a brief episode of activity that consumed nearby gas and dust. The flare’s power was insufficient to disturb the galaxy’s overall structure, but it revises the view of Sagittarius A* as a completely static object and shows that such dormant black holes can sporadically reignite.

The discovery provides new insight into the short‑term variability of supermassive black holes and suggests that similar hidden eruptions may be common in other galaxies, influencing models of black‑hole feeding cycles and galactic evolution.
