Saglemi Housing Project undergoes rehabilitation in Ghana

The Saglemi Affordable Housing Project in Ghana has entered a new phase of rehabilitation following years of neglect and stagnation. Recent activity at the site includes vegetation clearing, infrastructure assessment, and the renovation of damaged buildings to prepare selected homes for potential occupation. The development features a variety of two-bedroom and three-bedroom attached and detached units, though progress across the site remains uneven.

The project's revival has reignited political debate regarding housing policy and financing models. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a former Housing Minister, stated that the continued work by private developers validates the Public-Private Participation (PSP) model. He noted that the current administration's decision to maintain this arrangement rather than returning the financial burden to the state serves as vindication for the model.

Originally designed to address Ghana's significant housing deficit, the Saglemi estate became a symbol of delay and controversy. During its period of inactivity, the site suffered from deteriorating infrastructure and the loss of materials, but recent efforts aim to restore the community to an operational state.
