Sagres training ship transports Nobel Prize medal to the Azores

The Portuguese training ship Sagres has transported the 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine medal belonging to Craig Mello from the United States to the Azores. Mello, an American researcher of Azorean descent, requested that the medal make the reverse journey of his great-grandfather by being carried by the Sagres.

The ship met with Mello and Portuguese researchers in Boston through an event organized by the Portuguese American Post Graduate Society. After arriving in Ponta Delgada, the medal was displayed for family and friends of the Nobel laureate before being sent to Dr. Mello. Captain José de Sousa Luís described the event as a bridge between the United States, Portugal, and the Azores.
