Saguenay region offers industrial significance and autumn tourism
The Saguenay region in Quebec offers diverse experiences ranging from historical resilience to seasonal tourism. The area, which includes the cities of Chicoutimi and La Baie, is a significant industrial hub for Canada, hosting a major aluminum smelting industry powered by local hydroelectric resources.
Historically, the region faced severe natural disasters, such as the July 1996 floods. Following heavy rainfall, a massive wall of water flowed over the Saguenay River, resulting in ten deaths, the destruction of hundreds of homes, and the evacuation of thousands of residents.
Today, the region is also a prominent destination for autumn tourism, particularly in the village of L'Anse-Saint-Jean. Visitors can explore the Saguenay Fjord through hiking trails like the Sentier des Poètes or visit the Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park to view scenic landscapes and waterfalls.
