Sahagún prepares for potential end of 150-year corralejas tradition

The municipality of Sahagún, Colombia, is preparing for its corralejas festival from November 11 to 17, 2026. This event, held in honor of rancher Juan Carlos Bula, represents a cultural tradition spanning over 150 years and serves as a significant driver for the local economy.

However, the future of these festivities is uncertain due to Law 2385 of 2024, which prohibits bullfighting and similar taurine practices in Colombia. The law establishes a transition period for the elimination of these activities, sparking debate regarding the impact on communities that rely on the festivals for their livelihoods. The event supports various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, street vendors, transporters, and local artisans.
