Sahara dust poses health risks in the Dominican Republic

The recent influx of Saharan dust over the Dominican Republic has raised health concerns. Infectious disease specialist Héctor Balcácer warned that the dust carries protein particles from plant and animal material, which can trigger allergic cough, nasal irritation, eye dryness and exacerbate asthma. He emphasized that rising temperatures and humidity increase the risk of cardiovascular events for patients with hypertension, kidney or heart conditions.

The Dominican Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery urged preventive actions. President Dr. Maribel Jorge recommended limiting outdoor exposure during peak dust concentrations, keeping doors and windows closed, staying well‑hydrated, and using damp cloths to clean surfaces. Vulnerable groups include people with asthma, COPD, allergies, the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with chronic illnesses. She advised patients not to stop their inhaler treatments and to seek medical care if breathing becomes difficult.

Both experts stress that while the phenomenon is natural, awareness and simple protective measures can reduce respiratory complications and other health impacts.
