Saharan dust and tropical waves affect Guatemala and Venezuela

Meteorological agencies in Guatemala and Venezuela have issued alerts regarding the arrival of Saharan dust and tropical activity.

In Guatemala, Insivumeh reported that a mass of Saharan dust entered the territory on September 16. Concentrations are expected to peak between Wednesday and the following days, with levels estimated between 50 and 100 µg/m³. The phenomenon is projected to remain over the country until September 21. Authorities have advised the population, particularly children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory conditions, to follow health and safety guidelines from the Ministry of Public Health and Conred.

In Venezuela, Inameh reported that tropical wave number 51 is moving west of the Cape Verde islands and is expected to reach Guayana Esequiba between September 21 and 22. Additionally, tropical wave number 50 is currently moving through eastern Venezuela, interacting with the intertropical convergence zone to produce variable rainfall and cloud cover. Inameh also noted the expected presence of light concentrations of Saharan dust, particularly along the coastline.
