Saharan Dust Cloud Intensifies Over Europe, Raising Health Risks in Portugal
A new study tracking over 18,500 daily measurements of atmospheric particles across 103 European sites from 2012 to 2021 shows that Saharan dust concentrations in southern Europe have risen by roughly 10%‑25% over the past decade. Average dust levels in the south reached 5.28 µg/m³, more than double the 2.09 µg/m³ measured in central and northern regions, with a yearly increase of about 0.055 µg/m³. Portugal, together with Spain, Italy and Greece, is among the most affected countries, especially during July‑August when dust plumes from the Sahara cross the Atlantic and move northward.
Researchers identified Saharan particles by their chemical fingerprints—high aluminum and titanium content—distinguishing them from urban pollutants rich in black carbon and calcium. Health assessments estimate that the elevated dust exposure adds 0.67% to daily mortality and 0.73% to respiratory hospital admissions for people over 15, while children under 14 face a 2.55% rise in respiratory hospitalizations. The dust also poses a growing challenge for solar photovoltaic systems, as suspended particles diminish solar radiation reaching panels and deposit on surfaces, reducing electricity generation.
The study highlights a shift in Europe’s air‑quality landscape: while industrial emissions have fallen due to stricter regulations and investments, the natural influx of Saharan dust is emerging as a new, harder‑to‑control air‑pollution source.
