Saharan Dust Cloud Reaches Louisiana, Prompting Health Warnings
A plume of Saharan dust that has traveled across the Atlantic Ocean is moving into Louisiana, bringing hazy conditions to much of the Gulf Coast region. The dust is expected to arrive in northern Louisiana within days, affecting residents statewide.
Health officials warn that the fine particles can aggravate respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, and heart disease. Dr. Diaz said, “We know that breathing in these small dust particles can make all those conditions worse.” He advises people with such conditions to limit outdoor exposure and wear face masks if they must be outside.
