Saharawi prisoner Naama Asfari ends 46‑day hunger strike after Morocco dialogue

Saharawi activist Naama Asfari, a 56‑year‑old political prisoner serving a 30‑year sentence at the Central Prison in Kenitra, Morocco, announced the suspension of his hunger strike after 46‑47 days. He said prison authorities had agreed to open a serious dialogue on his demands for basic human‑rights protections and a request to be transferred to a prison in Western Sahara.

Medical officials verified that his vital signs were normal after the protest ended, and he will remain under strict medical monitoring. Moroccan officials explained that the transfer request cannot be fulfilled because there are no long‑term detention facilities in the Sahara region. The League for the Protection of Saharawi Prisoners welcomed the decision, describing Asfari as a hero and praising the solidarity shown by Saharawi communities.
