Gdeim Izik prisoners announce hunger strike in Morocco
Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group have announced an intention to begin an indefinite hunger strike. The announcement, made on September 23, 2026, coincides with Moroccan legislative elections.
The prisoners are protesting their detention and the denial of their right to be transferred to cities in Western Sahara, citing international humanitarian law. Activist Naâma Asfari is among those participating in the movement.
The Moroccan General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) responded by stating that the hunger strike is not related to detention conditions. The DGAPR claims the move was directed by the Polisario Front to coincide with upcoming UN Security Council discussions regarding Western Sahara.
While the DGAPR noted that most prisoners' sentences are incompatible with transfers to southern provinces, they confirmed that one prisoner's request for transfer to Laayoune was granted.
