Sahel Alliance experts aim for medical sovereignty by 2026
Health experts from the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)—comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—met in Ouagadougou from August 11 to 14, 2026, to strengthen regional medical cooperation. The meeting focused on three priority areas: epidemiological surveillance, pharmaceutical regulation, and the collective procurement of medicines.
Burkina Faso’s Minister of Health, Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, emphasized the need to reduce dependence on external supply chains and improve quality control through a unified community model. The goal is to finalize these strategic frameworks by November 2026 to better address humanitarian challenges and medicine shortages in the region.
